Physiotherapist assessing shoulder pain at Excite Physiotherapy in Barrie

Does This Sound Familiar?

  • Pain when you reach overhead, behind your back, or into a high cupboard
  • Pain at night or when you lie on that side
  • Weakness when you lift or carry things
  • A stiff shoulder that is slowly losing movement
  • Clicking, catching, or a feeling that the shoulder is unstable

Common Causes We Assess

Shoulder pain has more than one cause, and the right plan depends on which one is driving yours. That is why every visit starts with a thorough assessment.

Learn More About Common Shoulder Conditions

  • Rotator cuff injuries: tendinopathy and tears, how they are assessed, when surgery is considered, and rehab.
  • Frozen shoulder: the three stages of adhesive capsulitis and how treatment changes at each one.

How Physiotherapy Can Help With Shoulder Pain

Your Physiotherapist will work with you on a plan built around your goals, whether that is sleeping through the night, lifting at work, or getting back to the gym or your sport. Depending on your assessment, treatment may include:

  • Advanced Manual Therapy for the shoulder, neck, and upper back
  • A progressive strengthening plan for the rotator cuff and shoulder blade muscles
  • IMS / dry needling for tight, irritated muscles
  • Shockwave Therapy, which may help with some persistent shoulder tendon problems such as calcific tendinitis
  • Rehabilitation after shoulder surgery, following your surgeon’s protocol

Not Sure Whether Physiotherapy Is Right for You?

Book a complimentary 15-minute discovery call with one of our Physiotherapists. It is a short online chat where you can ask questions before you book an assessment.

What to Expect at Your First Visit

  1. We listen. Your Physiotherapist will ask about your symptoms, your work, your activity, and what you want to get back to.
  2. We assess. A hands-on assessment of your shoulder, shoulder blade, and neck helps identify what is contributing to your pain, and screens for anything that needs a doctor’s attention.
  3. We make a plan together. You will leave with a clear explanation of what is going on, a treatment plan, and exercises you can start at home.

Please wear a tank top or loose t-shirt so we can see and move your shoulder. Read more about your first Physiotherapy appointment.

When to Get Urgent Medical Care

Go to the emergency department or call 911 if your shoulder pain comes with any of these:

  • Chest pain, shortness of breath, sweating, or nausea, especially with left shoulder or arm pain
  • A shoulder that looks deformed or that you cannot move after a fall or injury
  • A red, hot, swollen shoulder with a fever
  • Sudden weakness or numbness in your arm along with face drooping or trouble speaking

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need a doctor’s referral?

No referral is needed to see a Physiotherapist in Ontario. Some insurance plans require one for reimbursement, so check your plan if you are unsure.

Can Physiotherapy help a rotator cuff tear?

Many rotator cuff tears are managed well with an exercise-based Physiotherapy program. Your Physiotherapist will assess your shoulder strength and movement and will let you know if a surgical opinion is worth considering.

Do I need an MRI or ultrasound first?

Usually not. Most shoulder pain can be assessed and treated without imaging first. Your Physiotherapist will let you know if imaging or a visit to your doctor would be helpful.

Do you see patients after shoulder surgery?

Yes. We provide rehabilitation after shoulder surgery, including rotator cuff repairs, and follow your surgeon’s protocol. Bring any notes or exercise sheets from your surgical team to your first visit.

Is Physiotherapy covered by insurance?

Physiotherapy is covered by most extended health plans, and we direct bill to many insurers. See our FAQ page for the full list.
