Physiotherapist treating neck pain at Excite Physiotherapy in Barrie

Does This Sound Familiar?

  • Neck stiffness that makes it hard to turn your head, like checking your blind spot
  • Headaches that start at the base of your skull or behind your eyes
  • Pain between your shoulder blades after sitting at a computer
  • Pain, tingling, or numbness running into your arm or hand
  • Neck pain that keeps coming back or is affecting your sleep

Common Causes We Assess

  • Muscle and joint strain from desk work and long hours on screens
  • Cervicogenic headaches (headaches coming from the neck)
  • Tension-type headaches
  • Pinched nerves in the neck
  • Whiplash after a car accident
  • Jaw and TMJ problems that add to neck pain and headaches

Neck pain and headaches often have more than one cause, and the right plan depends on which one is driving yours. That is why every visit starts with a thorough assessment.

Headaches From the Neck

A cervicogenic headache is a headache that comes from the neck. It usually starts at the base of the skull and spreads over one side of the head, often with a stiff neck. Learn more about headache treatment in Barrie.

What Is a Pinched Nerve in the Neck?

A pinched nerve in the neck (cervical radiculopathy) happens when a nerve root is irritated as it leaves the spine. Common causes are a disc herniation or narrowing of the space around the nerve from age-related changes.

It can cause pain, tingling, numbness, or weakness running from the neck into the shoulder blade, arm, or hand. Many people find their arm symptoms settle over time with the right care, and Physiotherapy is often recommended as a first step.

Why Desk Work Can Lead to Neck Pain

No single posture is bad for your neck, but staying in any one position for hours can be. Long stretches looking down at a laptop or phone add load to the muscles and joints at the back of your neck. Changing position often, setting your screen at eye level, and building strength in your neck and upper back all help your neck tolerate a full work day.

How Physiotherapy Can Help With Neck Pain and Headaches

Your Physiotherapist will work with you on a plan built around your goals, whether that is getting through a work day without a headache, sleeping comfortably, or getting back to sport. Depending on your assessment, treatment may include:

Not Sure Whether Physiotherapy Is Right for You?

Book a complimentary 15-minute discovery call with one of our Physiotherapists. It is a short online chat where you can ask questions before you book an assessment.

What to Expect at Your First Visit

  1. We listen. Your Physiotherapist will ask about your symptoms, your work, your activity, and what you want to get back to.
  2. We assess. A hands-on assessment of your neck, upper back, shoulders, and jaw helps identify what is contributing to your pain, and screens for anything that needs a doctor’s attention.
  3. We make a plan together. You will leave with a clear explanation of what is going on, a treatment plan, and exercises you can start at home.

Please wear a top that lets us see and move your neck and shoulders, such as a tank top or t-shirt. Read more about your first Physiotherapy appointment.

  • A headache with a fever and a stiff neck
  • Dizziness, double vision, trouble speaking or swallowing, or numbness in your face

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need a doctor’s referral?

No referral is needed to see a Physiotherapist in Ontario. Some insurance plans require one for reimbursement, so check your plan if you are unsure.

Can Physiotherapy help with headaches?

Yes, when your headaches are linked to your neck, jaw, or muscle tension. Your Physiotherapist will assess whether your neck is contributing to your headaches and will let you know if you should see your doctor about other causes.
