- Back pain that keeps coming back every few months

- Disc irritation and disc herniation
- Sciatica and pinched nerves
- Piriformis syndrome
- Degenerative disc disease and arthritis

Back pain has more than one cause, and the right plan depends on which one is driving yours. That is why every visit starts with a thorough assessment.
Learn More About Common Back Conditions
- Disc herniation: what a bulging or herniated disc really means, why MRI findings are common in people without pain, and how Physiotherapy helps.
- Sciatica: pain, tingling, or numbness running down the leg, what causes it, and how it is treated.
Common Myths About Back Pain
- “I should rest until it stops hurting.” For most back pain, gentle movement helps more than bed rest.
- “Pain means I am doing damage.” Back pain is often a sign of sensitive tissues, not harm. Your Physiotherapist can help you understand which activities are safe.
- “I need a scan to find out what is wrong.” Most back pain is diagnosed with a thorough assessment, and scans often show changes that are normal for your age.
- “My back is fragile.” Your spine is strong and adaptable, and gradually building strength is one of the best ways to protect it.
How Physiotherapy Can Help With Low Back Pain and Sciatica
Your Physiotherapist will work with you on a plan built around your goals, whether that is sitting through a work day, lifting your kids, or getting back to the gym. Depending on your assessment, treatment may include:
- Advanced Manual Therapy for the spine, pelvis, and hips
- IMS / dry needling for tight, irritated muscles
- A progressive exercise plan to rebuild strength and confidence in movement, including core strengthening
- Education and activity advice so you understand your pain and can stay active while it settles
Not Sure Whether Physiotherapy Is Right for You?
Book a complimentary 15-minute discovery call with one of our Physiotherapists. It is a short online chat where you can ask questions before you book an assessment.
What to Expect at Your First Visit
- We listen. Your Physiotherapist will ask about your symptoms, your work, your activity, and what you want to get back to.
- We assess. A hands-on assessment of your back, hips, and the way you move helps identify what is contributing to your pain, and screens for anything that needs a doctor’s attention.
- We make a plan together. You will leave with a clear explanation of what is going on, a treatment plan, and exercises you can start at home.
Please wear comfortable clothing that lets you move freely, such as shorts or loose pants. Read more about your first Physiotherapy appointment.
When to Get Urgent Medical Care
Go to the emergency department or call 911 if your back pain comes with any of these:
- New trouble controlling your bladder or bowels
- Numbness in your groin, inner thighs, or around your bottom
- Weakness in your legs that is getting worse
- Back pain after a major fall or accident
- Back pain with a fever or unexplained weight loss

Frequently Asked Questions
Do I need a doctor’s referral?
No referral is needed to see a Physiotherapist in Ontario. Some insurance plans require one for reimbursement, so check your plan if you are unsure.
Do I need an X-ray or MRI first?
Usually not. Most low back pain does not need imaging before starting Physiotherapy. Your Physiotherapist will screen for anything that needs further testing and will let you know if you should follow up with your doctor.
Should I rest or keep moving?
For most people with low back pain, staying gently active helps more than bed rest. Your Physiotherapist will show you which movements and activities are right for you while your back settles.
How many visits will I need?
It depends on what is causing your pain and how long you have had it. Your Physiotherapist will discuss a realistic plan with you after your assessment.
Is Physiotherapy covered by insurance?
Physiotherapy is covered by most extended health plans, and we direct bill to many insurers. See our FAQ page for the full list.
