Does This Sound Familiar?
- Stabbing heel pain with your first few steps out of bed
- Pain that returns after sitting, then easing up and standing again
- Heel or arch pain after a long shift on your feet
- Pain at the back of the heel when walking, running, or climbing stairs
- Heel pain that has lasted weeks or months despite rest, stretching, or new shoes
Common Causes We Assess
- Plantar fasciitis (plantar heel pain)
- Heel spurs
- Achilles tendinopathy
- Heel fat pad irritation
- Foot and ankle stiffness or weakness that adds load to the heel
Heel pain has more than one cause, and the right plan depends on which one is driving yours. That is why every visit starts with a thorough assessment.
How Physiotherapy Can Help With Heel Pain
Your Physiotherapist will work with you on a plan built around your goals, whether that is walking without pain, getting through a work shift, or returning to running. Depending on your assessment, treatment may include:
- Hands-on treatment for the foot, ankle, and calf
- A progressive exercise plan to strengthen the foot and calf and gradually build tolerance to load
- Activity and footwear advice so you can stay active while your symptoms settle
- Shockwave therapy, which may help with persistent plantar heel pain, heel spurs, and Achilles pain
Interested in Shockwave Therapy?
If you already know you would like shockwave therapy for your heel, you can book a shockwave assessment directly. Shockwave is not suitable for everyone (for example during pregnancy, with a pacemaker, or within 6 weeks of a steroid injection in the area), so your Physiotherapist will screen you first.
What to Expect at Your First Visit
- We listen. Your Physiotherapist will ask about your symptoms, your activity, your work, and what you want to get back to.
- We assess. A hands-on assessment of your foot, ankle, and the way you move helps identify what is contributing to your heel pain.
- We make a plan together. You will leave with a clear explanation of what is going on, a treatment plan, and exercises you can start at home.
Please wear comfortable clothing and bring the shoes you wear most often.
