Motor Vehicle Accident & Whiplash Treatment

Whiplash is one of the more common issues faced after being in a car accident. After a car accident you may be scared, and feeling pain in areas where you haven’t had problems before. By booking one on one sessions we can help ease your fears and have you back to doing the things you love in no time.

What Is Whiplash?

Whiplash associated disorder (WAD) describes the pain, stiffness, muscle ache, and headache that accompany a sudden acceleration and deceleration injury from a motor vehicle accident. It affects the muscles, ligaments, and joints of the neck and upper back, and symptoms can sometimes take a day or two to fully appear after the accident.

Is This Treatment Right for You?

This treatment is a good fit if you’ve been in a motor vehicle accident and are experiencing neck pain, stiffness, headaches, upper back pain, or reduced range of motion, whether your symptoms started immediately or developed over the following days.

It’s not the right starting point if you’re experiencing red flag symptoms such as numbness or weakness spreading down an arm or leg, severe or worsening headache, dizziness, or vision changes. These warrant a medical assessment first. If we identify any of these during your appointment, we’ll help direct you to the appropriate care.

How Can Excite Physiotherapists Help?

Our physiotherapists are experts in evaluating whiplash injuries. We will treat you with expert hands-on therapies including active release, dry needling (IMS), and joint mobilization. We will give you helpful advice such as how much activity to do, when to rest, and whether to use heat or ice. When it is appropriate, we will give you specific exercises to help you recover from your whiplash injury fast.

What Happens at Your First Appointment

Your first appointment runs 45 to 60 minutes. We’ll start with a detailed history of the accident and your symptoms, then assess your neck, upper back, and shoulder range of motion, strength, and any areas of muscle guarding or joint restriction. From there, we’ll explain what we’re finding, begin hands-on treatment where appropriate, and set you up with a home exercise plan. Follow-up appointments typically run 25 to 30 minutes.

Is It Covered by Insurance?

Motor vehicle accident injuries in Ontario are typically covered through your auto insurance policy’s accident benefits, separate from your extended health benefits at work. Coverage details and paperwork requirements vary by insurer, so we recommend contacting your auto insurance provider as soon as possible after your accident to understand your specific benefits. Our team can help answer questions about the process during your visit.

Excite Physiotherapy is located at 105 Collier Street in downtown Barrie, Ontario. We offer one-on-one sessions for motor vehicle accident and whiplash recovery.
