<h3 class="p1">Proper Nutrition &amp; Hydration (Crucial Role of Recovery):</h3>
<p class="p1">Nutrition has become the cornerstone of my recovery routine. Opting for real food, mostly plant-based, nutrient-dense foods has been a game-changer. Steering clear of processed, sugar-laden options has allowed me to fuel my body with the essentials it craves. And let&#8217;s not forget about hydration &#8211; it&#8217;s the unsung hero of optimal function. Ensuring I&#8217;m well-hydrated keeps everything running smoothly.</p>
<h3 class="p1">Sleep Quality &amp; Quantity:</h3>
<p class="p1">Getting the right amount of restorative sleep has been a game-changer for me. Aim for 8-10 hours, they say, and I couldn&#8217;t agree more. I do best on about 9 hours of sleep. But it&#8217;s not just about the hours; it&#8217;s also about the quality of sleep. I&#8217;ve found that avoiding screens and blue light at least 2 hours before bedtime helps regulate my body&#8217;s internal clock, leading to more restful nights.</p>
<h3 class="p1">Stress Management:</h3>
<p class="p1">We all face different stressors, and finding what helps us unwind is crucial. For me, it&#8217;s about mindfulness practices and spending time on hobbies I&#8217;m passionate about. I love being outside in nature, riding my bike, or hurling myself down a mountain on my snowboard. It’s easy to get caught up in the small stuff, but I&#8217;ve learned to prioritize my mental and emotional well-being.</p>
<h3 class="p1">Soft Tissue &amp; Neurological Recovery:</h3>
<p class="p1">Physiotherapy, <a href="https://www.gunnims.com/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">IMS</a>, massage, <a href="https://www.wimhofmethod.com/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">cold immersion</a>, yoga, and foam rolling &#8211; these recovery modalities have become my secret weapons. They&#8217;ve worked wonders in releasing muscle tension, improving my range of motion, and enhancing overall function. These modalities are crucial in the role of recovery.</p>
<h3 class="p1">Understanding Overtraining vs. Under-recovery (Crucial Role of Recovery):</h3>
<p class="p1">It&#8217;s tempting to chalk up performance plateaus or injuries to over training. But I&#8217;ve learned the importance of considering under-recovery. Neglecting rest, nutrition, and stress management can leave the body struggling to keep up. Adjusting my approach to recovery has often been the key to unlocking newfound performance levels.</p>

<h3>What is jaw pain (TMJ) and how is it connected to headaches?</h3>
<p>Jaw pain and headaches are all too familiar sensations that people worldwide experience. This common encounter can affect the mouth’s function, limit use, and decrease quality of life overall. The Temporomandibular joint (TMJ) located on either side of your head, in front of your ears, is often the source of jaw discomfort and can also cause intolerable headaches. Many patients are unaware of the signs/symptoms affiliated, treatments available, and preventative measures obtainable. Our Physiotherapists and Massage Therapists have all the tools and knowledge necessary to settle TMJ dysfunction and exterminate jaw pain causing headaches.</p>
<h3>What causes jaw pain and headaches?</h3>
<p>There are many possible underlying causes of jaw pain. Many diagnoses are treatable and can be resolved within a few days with the correct treatment. Those with jaw pain are often found to be experiencing pain due to dental problems, temporomandibular joint disorder (TMJ, TMD), tension headaches, and migraines. Additionally, these recurrent pathologies are seen daily in our Physio clinic and are as frequently remediated for patient satisfaction.</p>
<h3>How do I know if I have a jaw problem?</h3>
<p>Many of us may have experienced jaw pain and may be able to relate to the following most-seen symptoms;</p>
<ul>
<li>Pain in the jaw joint, face, and neck</li>
<li>Headaches, including tension headaches and migraines</li>
<li>Clicking or popping sounds in the jaw</li>
<li>Difficulty opening or closing the mouth</li>
<li>Teeth grinding or clenching</li>
</ul>
<h3>How do you diagnose TMJ and headaches?</h3>
<p>Although jaw pain is typically diagnosable via telling signs and physical examination, more complex cases may require imaging for specific detection. X-rays, MRIs, CTs, and EMGs may be used when necessary for verification and to gather more information about the pathology.</p>
<h3>How can I fix my jaw pain? How can I get rid of a headache?</h3>
<p>Numerous remedies are available regarding jaw pain and headaches. You can try using medications for resolving pain and muscle spasms, as well as oral appliances to realign the bite and prevent grinding. However, <a href="https://www.excitephysio.com/about-us-advanced-physiotherapists/">Physiotherapists</a> resolve jaw pain using manual therapy, exercise, and self-relieving techniques. These methods are minimally invasive, and instantaneous results can be shown! <p><strong>What is the spine (low back pain)?</strong></p>
<p><span data-preserver-spaces="true">The spine is a unique structure that can bear load and bend in six degrees of freedom (think left side bending, right side bending, rounding forward, arching back, and twisting both left and right); it can absorb shock and rarely buckles under load (McGill, 2015). Most engineers could barely dream of a structure that acts as the spine does. So how does the spine manage to pull it all off? Stabilization.</span></p>
<p>&nbsp;</p>
<p><strong><span data-preserver-spaces="true">What is spine stability?</span></strong></p>
<p><span data-preserver-spaces="true">Perhaps you have heard a <a href="https://www.excitephysio.com/aboutus/">physiotherapist</a> or fitness professional refer to spine stability, stabilization muscles, core stability, or core strength to relieve low back pain. However, has anyone told you what stability means, or how it applies to low back pain?</span></p>
<p>&nbsp;</p>
<p><span data-preserver-spaces="true">As I begin to demonstrate my own understanding of spine stability, I want you to imagine a fishing rod placed vertically with the reel end closest to the ground instead of imagining the spine (back). What would happen if you were to push (i.e. apply compressive force) to the very top of the rod? The rod would bend/buckle in one direction, usually in the direction of the weakest point. Now, suppose the rod was supported by guy wires, bilaterally, at multiple points down the rod and are connected to the ground on either side. If all of these guy wires have the same amount of tension, and you were to again push on the rod&#8217;s tip, what would happen this time? Well, hopefully, the rod would not buckle. What if the guy wires on the left were loose and tight on the right? The rod would buckle to the left. (Spine analogy used by McGill, 2015)</span></p>
<p>&nbsp;</p>
<p><span data-preserver-spaces="true">Now imagine this same situation, but instead of a fishing rod, it is your spine, and instead of guy wires, it is your trunk muscles. Spine stability is when we can keep the spine in its natural upright position (or neutral curves) without buckling under compressive forces and is created through the stiffness that muscles develop (McGill, 2015).</span></p>

<p><strong><span data-preserver-spaces="true">Why is it important?</span></strong></p>
<p><span data-preserver-spaces="true">Spine stability is critical to health because when the spine buckles or is not stabilized, injury can occur, even if it is a micromovement (McGill, 2015). These injuries to the low back can occur acutely; however, they are often developed chronically through repetitive or sustained patterns. Using the same imagery as above, we could imagine a few instances that would cause the spine to buckle. One would be if the guy wires/muscles create unequal tension and pull the spine in one way. This could happen from moving improperly or your muscles engaging at the wrong times. Another mechanism of injury could occur if you were to press with too much force on the top of the rod/spine or are carrying considerable weight. The spine can hold the most compressive force when it is in its neutral position. Once it deviates from this neutral position, it will buckle under less compression and be at a higher risk of injury. Therefore, spine stabilization is an essential aspect of low back injury prevention and rehabilitation.</span></p>

<p><strong><span data-preserver-spaces="true">How can I improve my spine stability?</span></strong></p>
<p><span data-preserver-spaces="true">To improve back health, spine stability can be trained by learning how to move while maintaining the spine in a neutral position. By doing this, we teach the muscles in your trunk and core to support the spine and prevent it from moving into ranges that can cause injury. It is a common condition that can cause a variety of symptoms, including pain, clicking or popping in the jaw, and difficulty opening or closing the mouth.</p>
<p>There are a variety of causes of TMJ disorder, including injury to the jaw, arthritis, and bruxism (teeth grinding). Stress can also be a contributing factor, as it can lead to tightening of the jaw muscles.</p>
<p>Symptoms of TMJ disorder can range from mild to severe, and can include:</p>
<ul>
<li>Pain or tenderness in the jaw, face, neck, or shoulders</li>
<li>A popping or clicking sound when opening or closing the mouth</li>
<li>Limited ability to open the mouth wide</li>
<li>Difficulty or discomfort when biting or chewing</li>
<li>Swelling on the side of the face</li>
<li>Headaches or earaches</li>
</ul>
<p>Treatment for TMJ disorder depends on the underlying cause and the severity of the symptoms. In mild cases, self-care measures such as over-the-counter pain relievers, ice packs, and jaw exercises may be enough to relieve symptoms. In more severe cases, treatment may include Physiotherapy, Massage Therapy, a splint or mouthguard to wear at night, or in rare cases, surgery.</p>
<p>To help prevent TMJ disorder, it is important to practice good posture and avoid clenching or grinding your teeth. If you are under a lot of stress, try to find ways to relax and reduce tension in your jaw muscles.</p>
<p>If you are experiencing symptoms of TMJ disorder, it is important to see a Physiotherapist for an evaluation. We can help determine the underlying cause of your symptoms and recommend the most appropriate treatment.</p>

From there, the Physiotherapist will develop a treatment plan that may include exercises to improve range of motion and muscle strength, as well as <a href="https://www.excitephysio.com/services/#advanced-manual-therapy">manual therapy</a> techniques to release tight muscles and improve joint mobility, and intramuscular stimulation (<a href="https://www.excitephysio.com/services/#advanced-manual-therapy:~:text=Techniques-,Intramuscular,-Stimulation">IMS or dry needling</a>).</p>
<p>Some common exercises used in Physiotherapy for TMJ include jaw stretches, isometric exercises, and progressive resistance exercises. Jaw stretches involve opening the mouth as wide as possible and holding the position for a few seconds, while isometric exercises involve contracting the jaw muscles without moving the jaw. Progressive resistance exercises involve using small weights or resistance bands to gradually increase the strength of the jaw muscles.</p>

<h2>What is CrossFit?</h2>
<p class="p2">CrossFit is a high-intensity sport involving power lifting, gymnastics, conditioning and agility. This extreme sport attracts elite competitors, but also welcomes beginners as it is modifiable to all. Certified CrossFit coaches are trained to teach participants how to engage muscle, and brace certain muscles groups. This method encourages safer and more efficient performance, especially when completing deadlifts, cleans, snatches and other olympic lifts but; CrossFit can leave out a vital injury preventative measure.</p>
<h2>How Can Physiotherapy Prevent or Treat Injury?</h2>
<p class="p2">As CrossFit is such a demanding sport involving entire body workouts, injury is evidently to occur. Additionally, CrossFit focuses on strength, endurance and power, leaving out mobility. Many injuries occur when mobility is neglected. Thus, this is where Physiotherapy comes into play. A lot of time is spent facilitating muscles, therefore very little time relaxing. Physiotherapy can help CrossFit athletes prevent, recover and rehabilitate from injury.</p>

<p>I am hearing the term Piriformis Syndrome a lot lately. So what even is this? The Piriformis is a little muscle deep in the hip that works as a rotator of the hip. This muscle is interesting in that the sciatic muscle typically exits underneath this muscle, but anatomical variations exist where the sciatic nerve pierces the Piriformis muscle.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Having a shortened, injured or hypertonic Piriformis muscle can lead to compression of the sciatic nerve. This can cause pain, numbness, and tingling all the way along the sciatic nerve down to the foot.&nbsp;</p>

<p>It’s important that Piriformis Syndrome is differentiated from Lumbar Pathology including Disc Herniation, Facet Irritation and SacroIliac Joint .</p>

<p>Symptoms of Piriformis Syndrome include low back pain, buttock pain, numbness , difficulty walking, sitting, squatting, and standing.</p>

<p>As a highly trained Physiotherapist I have the skills to accurately diagnose and apply the proper treatment to get you better fast!</p>

<p>Treatment for this condition includes manual therapy to release the deep muscles of the hip and low back. Progressive muscle strengthening and stretching addressing the core muscles and the gluteals. I also utilized a unique technique called IMS, IntraMuscular Stimulation. I use a fine and flexible needle placed deep into the muscle to release tight bands of tissue. This can be a very helpful addition to Physiotherapy.&nbsp;</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The Biceps Brachii muscle has two attachments at the shoulder and one at the elbow. There are two heads of the muscle: the long and short. The long head assists with shoulder flexion and forearm supination, and the short head primarily flexes the elbow. &#8220;Popeye muscle&#8221; is a tear of the long head of biceps muscle at the shoulder. Part of the muscle rolls down due to the missing attachment point, giving it that &#8220;Popeye&#8221; attachmentIt occurs more commonly in men ages 40-60, either as a degenerative tear, or with repetitive use. This tear does really well with conservative management, including Physiotherapy. Surgery can be considered if the patient has a hard time accepting the muscle appearance. </p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">  A client asked me yesterday about the clunking/clicking coming from deep inside her hip. So what is making that sound? In her case, it was her tight Iliopsoas (Psoas) muscle snapping over the boney aspect of the front of her pelvis. </p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">  The psoas is a deep muscle that starts in your lumbar spine and attaches to your femur. It&#8217;s main action is hip flexion, and it also flexes the trunk. </p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">    People often think this noise is from their hip joint, and they are frightened. Unless you have been in a serious accident, this isn&#8217;t your hip joint &#8220;going out.&#8221; Hip joints are very stable and it would take a lot of force to dislocate it. It is normal for the psoas muscle to move over the front of the pelvis bone, but when it is too tight it will snap like a bowstring causing that deep clunking sound. </p>
