Virtual Physiotherapy

Virtual Physiotherapy in Ontario

What Is Virtual Physiotherapy?

Virtual physiotherapy is a one-on-one appointment with a Registered Physiotherapist conducted over secure video call instead of in person. You’ll go through the same process as an in-clinic visit: a discussion of your health history and current concern, a guided movement assessment, hands-on-style coaching through specific tests, and a treatment plan built around exercises, education, and self-management strategies you can start right away.

Is Virtual Physiotherapy Right for You?

Virtual care works well for home exercise program check-ins and progressions, post-surgical guidance when travel is difficult, follow-up appointments after an initial in-person assessment, general movement, posture, and ergonomic advice, and patients located outside the Barrie area who want access to our team.

It’s not the right fit for conditions that need hands-on treatment such as manual therapy, dry needling (IMS), or shockwave therapy, or for a first assessment of an acute injury where a physical exam changes the diagnosis. If we determine during booking or during your session that you need to be seen in person, we’ll let you know and help you get scheduled.

What You’ll Need for Your Appointment

A phone, tablet, or computer with a camera and microphone, a stable internet connection, and enough open space to stand, walk a few steps, and move through basic positions like sitting, standing, and lying down. Wear clothing that allows us to see the area of concern, the same as you would for an in-clinic visit.

What Happens in Your First Session

Your first virtual appointment runs 20 to 30 minutes. We’ll start with a detailed history of your condition and goals, then guide you through a movement assessment using verbal cues and visual observation over video. From there, we’ll explain what we’re finding, in plain language, and build a treatment plan with exercises, education, and a home program tailored to you.

Christine recently completed a virtual session with a fellow cyclist. He was experiencing numbness issues as well as feeling like his reach was too long. Using video, she was able to see his exact setup and guide him through various drills and exercises.

Is It Covered by Insurance?

Many extended health benefit plans cover virtual physiotherapy the same way they cover in-person visits, but coverage varies by provider and plan. We recommend checking with your insurance provider before your appointment to confirm your coverage for virtual care specifically.
